Mask of the Red Death

One of my earliest memories is of a paperback book about old movies that was on a shelf in our basement at home. Inside was a photo of Lon Chaney in his “Red Death” costume from Phantom of the Opera. Something about that old photo was deeply creepy and disturbing. It stood out from all the other stills in the book, which all looked like they came from “movie land”. But this character somehow seemed “real”. And really scary!
